Sexual trauma is a pervasive issue in the United States military. The Department of Defense's annual survey on sexual assault in the military estimated that in 2021, there were 8.4% of active-duty women and 1.5% of active-duty men who experienced sexual assault.
The documentary film Hope Evolved, formerly known as The Invisible War, sheds light on this hidden epidemic. Released in 2012, the film follows the stories of several survivors of military sexual trauma as they seek justice and healing.
One of the survivors featured in the film is Kori Cioca. Cioca was a 19-year-old Air Force airman when she was raped by her supervisor. She reported the assault, but her case was mishandled by the military justice system. Cioca's story is a powerful example of the challenges that survivors of military sexual trauma face.
Another survivor featured in the film is Susan Burke. Burke was a 22-year-old Navy sailor when she was raped by a fellow sailor. She also reported the assault, but her case was dismissed by the military. Burke's story highlights the need for better training and support for military personnel who respond to sexual assault cases.
The film Hope Evolved has had a significant impact on the fight against sexual trauma in the military. The film has helped to raise awareness of the issue and has led to changes in military policy. In 2013, the Department of Defense created the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office (SAPRO) to address the issue of sexual assault in the military.
SAPRO has implemented a number of programs and initiatives to prevent sexual assault and to support survivors. These programs include:
- The Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) program provides training and support to military personnel on how to prevent and respond to sexual assault.
- The Special Victims Counsel (SVC) program provides legal assistance to survivors of sexual assault.
- The Safe Helpline provides confidential support to survivors of sexual assault.
The film Hope Evolved has also helped to inspire survivors of military sexual trauma to come forward and share their stories. In 2014, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) launched the Military Sexual Trauma (MST) Resolution Center to provide support to veterans who have experienced sexual trauma.
The MST Resolution Center provides a safe and confidential space for veterans to talk about their experiences and to get the help they need. The center also provides veterans with access to legal, medical, and mental health services.
The fight against sexual trauma in the military is far from over. However, the film Hope Evolved has made a significant contribution to the fight. The film has helped to raise awareness of the issue, has led to changes in military policy, and has inspired survivors to come forward and share their stories.
If you or someone you know has experienced sexual trauma, there is help available. The National Sexual Assault Hotline can be reached at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673). The VA MST Resolution Center can be reached at 1-855-948-9848.
