I had the privilege of meeting Tadeusz Kantor on several occasions, and each encounter was a memorable experience. He was a brilliant and charismatic artist, and his ideas about theater had a profound impact on me. In this article, I will share some of my memories of Kantor and discuss his unique approach to theater.

First Encounter: The Cricot 2 Theater

I first met Kantor in 1965, when I visited the Cricot 2 Theater in Kraków, Poland. The theater was located in a former monastery, and its interior was filled with strange and wonderful objects, including antique furniture, mannequins, and puppets.

Kantor was rehearsing a new play, and he invited me to watch. The play was called "The Dead Class," and it was a powerful and disturbing meditation on death, memory, and the passage of time. The actors wore masks and costumes, and the stage was filled with symbolic objects.

I was immediately struck by Kantor's unique approach to theater. He used a variety of techniques to create a sense of ritual and mystery, and he was not afraid to explore dark and difficult themes.

Second Encounter: The Venice Biennale

I met Kantor again in 1976, at the Venice Biennale. He was representing Poland at the exhibition, and he had created a large-scale installation called "The Emballage." The installation consisted of a series of wrapped objects, including furniture, clothing, and body parts.

Kantor's installation was a powerful statement about the Holocaust and the horrors of war. It was also a deeply personal work, as Kantor had lost many of his family members during the war.

I was deeply moved by Kantor's installation, and I believe it is one of the most important works of art of the 20th century.

Third Encounter: The Paris Biennale

I met Kantor for the last time in 1980, at the Paris Biennale. He was presenting a new play called "Wielopole, Wielopole." The play was a deeply personal work, and it was based on Kantor's memories of his childhood in Poland.

The play was a powerful and moving experience, and it was clear that Kantor was a master of his craft. He used a variety of techniques to create a sense of timelessness and memory, and he was able to evoke a wide range of emotions in the audience.

Tadeusz Kantor was a brilliant and innovative artist who made a significant contribution to the history of experimental theater. His work was characterized by its use of ritual, symbolism, and the grotesque, and he was known for his innovative use of stage space and objects.

I had the privilege of meeting Tadeusz Kantor on several occasions, and each encounter was a memorable experience. He was a brilliant and charismatic artist, and his ideas about theater had a profound impact on me.

Kantor's work continues to be relevant today, and it is a testament to his genius that his work is still being performed and studied around the world.
